Updated November 2011…….
It’s a funny thing that after 7 years of living here, we’ve been poisoned by food only once and it was eating inside an all-inclusive hotel we visited for a day to do some high-wire adventure. Those of you who choose to stay inside one of these featureless places will truly miss out on a wonderful town and many good meals out. Cabarete is a very safe town to walk around in – don’t be afraid to venture out at night.
Things to look out for; many restaurants have to charge ITBIS (16%) and LEY (10%) taxes – Check that prices include or exclude either one or both of the taxes. Try to have USD and Dominican Pesos with you – pay in whichever currency the menu is priced to avoid poor exchange rates. Don’t expect anyone to accept credit cards; paying cash can sometimes avoid the taxes. In our rough price guide, each ‘$’ sign represents around $10 USD. Many of the restaurants we’ve listed in the ‘$‘ category, will actually serve a meal for less than $200 RD (less than $6 USD).
Cabarete Bay has a line of restaurants sitting directly on the sand. In the evenings, hundreds of palm trees are lit up with a variety of colourful lanterns and the restaurants place their seating directly beneath. It’s a real picture. These restaurants tend to be the more ‘touristy’ ones and not all of them offer good food (although some are great and listed below). Some of the best eating places are located off the beach and unless you know where they are, they are not easy to find.
Here’s a list of restaurants and cafe’s where we enjoy eating, where we get consistently good food and good service; There are sure to be other places that you would enjoy that we don’t regularly go to, but as this is our Blog, these are our favourites. We’ve included the ones outside of Cabarete that we are prepared to drive to regularly.
Restaurants off the main beach……..located in Cabarete Town;
Yamazato – location Ocean Dream Plaza, West end of town ……..Excellent Sushi + they still have the nicest, most hard working waiter in Cabarete $$$
Gorditos – (On Facebook) Ocean Dream Plaza too – great Mexican food, freshly prepared and bargain prices $
Locos de Enfrente (Swiss Steak House) – Opposite Ocean Dream inside the entrance to the Callejon – walk 100m or so into the ‘old’ Cabarete and you will find this ordinary looking restaurant on the left – great value steak and simple tasty food. $$
Bliss – (On Facebook) very nicely designed restaurant – (has just been sold, so we are waiting to see what the new owner does – we will keep you posted).
‘Chicken Man‘ this is a real Dominican grilled chicken place – superb chicken and very reasonably priced – located right on the Calle Principal (main road) in Cabarete and again, opposite Ocean Dream around the entrance to the Callejon. $ No phone

Aloha Surf Bar/Restaurant J.C. from Venezuela and Jess from France have made a cool, surfer bar in the road that leads down to the beach alongside Ocean One/Pelican Beach at the West end of town. It’s a great place to have a beer and a reasonably priced meal, watch surf videos or listen to the live music they have most Friday nights. We highly recommend J.C.’s traditional Venezuelan beef stew with black beans – it’s delicious….. $$
Claro’s – (On Facebook) this is great for breakfast and lunch – they are not open in the evenings. Very fresh imaginative food. Located at the East side of Cabarete, 100m after Janet’s Supermarket on the left-hand-side. $$ 809 889 1406
Bogattas – great Italian home made pizza – much cheaper than Pomodoros, but the setting is not so lovely, right on the main road, center of Cabarete high street, beach side of road. $ Phone 809 571 0271
Bayrischer Hof – if you like big plates of German food (and some other tasty, simple meals), this is one of Cabarete’s longest running restaurants. Ricardo prepares good, tasty cuisine and it’s very good value too. Especially love his fried fish filet, chicken cordon bleu, Wienerschnitzel, sauerkraut and lasagne. You will find the restaurant in the road running opposite Gordito’s and Yamazoto, alongside Swell Surf Camp. $
Belgian Bakery – newly opened in a plaza at the entrance to Cabarete – this is a very dangerous place if you are on a diet. Location is shortly after Ocean One approaching from the West, on the right hand side of the road. $
Janet’s Supermarket Cafe – (On Facebook) This new restaurant promises to be a success with their very reasonably priced food. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner until 9pm. Janet’s is at the East end of Cabarete town center. $
On the  main beach Cabarete;……….
Papy’s (La Cassita) – Shrimp and great Steak – consistently good food and nice vibe – sometimes the Dominican band they allow to play upstairs there can be a bit disturbing. Located centrally in the main bay $$$$ No phone
Onno’s (On Facebook) – American type food; tasty, reasonably priced and a nice atmosphere, sitting on table in the sand (Onno’s later becomes one of the favourite clubs – table disappear at around 10 and the music starts but Onno’s is cool after 1am). Onno’s has a happy hour for food and drink. Located centrally in the main bay. Normally $$$ / happy hour = $$
Lax – (On Facebook) ditto Onno’s…..save for the fact that Lax is the start off point for the parties; closes around 1am. Located centrally in the main bay. Normally $$$ / happy hour = $$
Pomodoro’s (on Facebook) – great pizza, prepared by an Italian, directly on the main bay. They could do with updating their furniture on the beach part. $$ Phone 809 571 0085
Mojito Bar – (On Facebook) The newest craze in lunchtime dining – freshly made excellent ciabatta sandwiches and a freshly squeezed juice for around $5.50 US dollars. $
Jose O’Shea’s – this is the uber-tourist place to eat but why do we still quite like it? Well, we once we sat in 3 different restaurants in succession on the beach and moved on after 10/15 minutes or more of being ignored in each one. Finally we ended up in Jose O’Shea’s and got speedy service with a nice welcome and good food. It’s often criticized for being too expensive, but if you’re hungry and don’t want to sit waiting for a waitress for eternity; go there. They also get criticized for being unfair in their exchange rates, so check the rate of the day $$$
Toma La Luna – (inside the Velero Beach Resort) currently closed but rumour has it it will re-open shortly as a Thai restaurant.
Otra Cosa – (On Facebook) On the beach but on the other side of the Velero Resort, which is the last resort you can see on the Eastern ‘point’ of Cabarete Bay; Charming, romantic and excellent food. $$$$ Phone 809 571 0607
Cabarete Coffee Company (On Facebook) – (a short moto taxi towards Kite Beach or 15 minute walk from town) – this is located at the Nanny Estate, on the main road, right hand side (driving West). Tricia’s excellent cafe is centered around the best, organically grown coffee we’ve ever tasted – they serve delicious wraps, egg/bacon muffins, lovely smoothies, etc. and they deliver too $ Phone 809 571 0919
after hours……….Look for ‘pork sandwich man’ – to be found as you leave one of the Cabarete clubs (like Onno’s) he is always cooking next to the Blue Bar on the opposite side of the road to the beach. He roasts a leg of pork and reheats slices for few moments before putting it in a bun with salad and mayo. Don’t be afraid of eating one – they are delicious and a real help to stave off a possible hangover $
Restaurants worth walking further, driving to or taking a cab;
At Kite Beach (Kite Beach is 2km West of Cabarete)
Calen’s Cafe at Kite Club (on Facebook) Kite Beach; open for members and non-members for lunch and sometimes a BBQ night. Eat good food, like spicy chicken wraps, tuna burgers or my personal favorite special of the day, pumpkin soup with a BLT on the side while you watch the kite boarders showing off. Calen delivers too $ . Phone; 829 644 8404
Natura Cabanas inside Perla Marina – (10 minute taxi ride) romantic, peaceful and good food. Right on the beach. Perla Marina located 4km outside of Cabarete, right hand side, 1km after Encuentro. $$$$ Phone 809 571 1507
The Beach Club, (On Facebook) inside Sea Horse Ranch (less than 15 minute taxi ride) – now under new management – the ocean-front setting is magical and unrivaled in it’s beauty with views all the way to Puerto Plata. The food is an eclectic mix of Asian, African and European (Vatche and Anahid are Armenian and raised in Ethiopia). Prices are reasonable, even cheap when you consider the setting. Vatche is heavily into the music scene of the Dominican Republic so with their many connections, they host some pretty impressive live music performances each month. $$ Phone 809 224 3110 / 809 223 1748
Blue Moon – (On Facebook) This place is a drive up in the mountains of about 25 minutes. Eneyda puts on quite a spectacle in a unique dining experience. Don’t expect chairs or cutlery, but the tasty food is served in a tent with magnificent views. You will need to go in groups and book in advance. It is considered to be one of the ‘must-do’ restaurant experiences in the area. $$ Phone; 809 757-0614
Castle Club – also close to the Blue Moon in the mountains, go in a group of 6 or more, book in advance, take a taxi and enjoy the home-made tasty food of this very interesting couple, Doug and Marguerite, in their ‘never quite finished’, but nevertheless stunning home. $$$ Phone: 809/357-8334; 809/223-0601; 809/223-0601
A good tip for the The Beach Club, Blue Moon and Castle Club restaurants, be there for the sunsets around 6pm.
Meanwhile;   Places where we would NOT eat if the food was given away free;
Casanova (on the beach Cabarete) why? Because when we complained about the food served to us still frozen, which came back to the table twice, STILL frozen in the center, we finally ended up having to argue with the ‘manager’ about taking it off the bill. His exact words were ”look, I don’t give a f**k” – Charming…….. Food is neither freshly or well prepared so there is always a risk of food poisoning.
Extreme Hotel – ditto, food poisoning risk as they do not have constant electricity to keep their fridges running.
